We Were Always Playing Music. Then We Put It on Stages.

Gordon Dukes and Donnamarie knew each other long before there was a company. They went to the same middle school and later the same high school, in the kind of small community where people generally knew one another.

They were not high-school sweethearts.

Gordon was a singer, a performer and very popular. Donnamarie was quieter, shy, a little awkward, she would say, and worked on the school’s news page. Their lives eventually went in different directions. Gordon left to pursue music in New York. Donnamarie followed fashion, editorial and beauty, later moving to New York for college.

Years passed.

One night, Donnamarie went out with friends to hear a soul and funk band that had become a popular draw in the city. From where she was sitting, the singer looked familiar. The women beside her were marveling at the vocals and the music, and she couldn’t help agreeing.

She knew Gordon could sing. She had just never heard him sing like that.

Maybe it was him.

It was.

By the time they married and began raising a family, music was simply part of the household. Gordon toured and recorded. Donnamarie continued in fashion and beauty before entrepreneurship and a growing family changed the shape of her working life.

Apartments became houses and houses became apartments again. The size of the room changed. There were always instruments. Analogue studios eventually became smaller digital ones, but music continued to be written, rehearsed and pulled apart at home.

Their children learned to hear its structure before most of them could sing, play or perform: bass lines, chords, harmonies, instrumentation and the small signatures that make a song recognizable.

The business came later.

Donnamarie began paying attention to what happened on the other side of the stage. Weddings were particularly interesting: several generations, often with very different musical histories, sharing one room. When the musicians could genuinely reach all of them, the response was unmistakable.

There was an idea in that: bring the musicianship and discipline of a touring band to celebrations, then build the organization around it properly.

That idea became The Best Wedding Band and helped shape Gordon Dukes Music Company.

The music came first. The company gave it somewhere to go.
